HONED brings together the specialists organisations turn to when performance and wellbeing turn out to be the same problem. This session looks at one of the least visible drains on both, financial stress, and at how it reaches engagement long before it reaches a survey.

The session is hosted by Aetas Wealth and Every Wellbeing. HONED lists it, and is neither a host of it nor a regulated adviser.

Most organisations can see that engagement is slipping. Far fewer can say why, or what it is actually costing them.

In this 45-minute session, including a 30-minute presentation followed by questions and answers, we will look at the current state of employee engagement in the UK, what tends to sit underneath it, and how leaders can begin to read the signals in their own organisation. We will put a number on one driver that almost never appears in an engagement survey: financial stress.

The average small business loses £7,404 a year to it, through absence and through people who are at work but not really working. You will leave able to work out your own figure.

Why attend

Engagement is one of those problems that is easy to see and hard to explain. You can feel when something has shifted in a team: the energy, the discretionary effort, the people who used to volunteer and now do not. What is much harder is knowing what is behind it and where to put your attention first.

This session gives you a way of thinking about that and then does something most engagement sessions cannot: it puts a pound figure on one of the causes. If you run a business, you will leave knowing roughly what this is costing you. If you look after the people in one, you will leave with a case you can take to whoever holds the budget.

What attendees will learn

  • Where employee engagement currently sits in UK organisations and the pressures behind it.
  • How to read the signals in their own organisation: what to examine and what those signals indicate.
  • Why financial stress almost never appears in engagement data, even when it is a significant driver.
  • What it costs a business of their size and where that cost is hidden.
  • Three things they can act on this quarter without a budget round.
